INAYAN Komagong sticks - 30"x1" - For Sale

Postby BirdieKing on May 1st, 2009, 8:41 pm

Greetings,

I have for sale 2 pairs of Komagong sticks measuring 30" x 1 inch. These are nice dark brown to black and tight grain. These are a rare set for a few reasons:

1. They are 30" x 1" not 28"x 3/4" like you find all over the net
2. We had these custom made for us in the Philippines and hand carried back for us
3. They have "INAYAN" carved on the end of each. The carvings are nice and deep and are about 2" x 3/4"

We had a small batch made up a while ago and these are the pick of the litter. There are some paint scuffs from using on a tire a couple times that had some white paint on it, no cracks, pits, gouges or anything like that. These were oiled well when they came over from the PI. I'm asking $60.00 a pair or make an offer for both pairs. I'm offering this up on the Inayan forum first so they go to good homes.

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

I got another pair of the Kamagong with the "INAYAN" carving nice and deep in the wood from a former student who has not had time to practice. This is probably the last pair I'll get. These are un-oiled and un-sanded, pretty much exactly like when we got them from the P.I.

These are not all dark wood so I'll sell these for $50 but the pattern is exceptional and looks very nice. Check out the video.

Send me a PM if interested. I can do paypal or money orders.

Shipping will be around $10 for most places. If you want them before christmas we will have to do UPS or Fedex overnight which would be quite a bit more if they can even do it.

Is that 50 for the set or apiece sir?

Does the fact that they are not all dark wood mean that they are less structurally sound than an all dark stick?

In my opinion.... yes. And buyer beware (not regarding this thread!), when buying Kamagong many times the seller will try to hide the fact the sticks are "milky" or have some lighter areas in them by staining or painting them.

I do have a few pieces that have beautiful designs in them because of the light and dark. Though i do not think they are "as" strong as some of the solid dark pieces i have.... they are still very strong and i sure would not want to get hit by them!

It's 50 for the pair. According to the forestry agent in the p.I. We got the wood from; darkness is to the density of the wood and the age and a couple other factors such as where in the tree the wood comes from. The strength is in the grain which on these is very tight and even.

Just want to add, that when regarding the durability of kamagong, grain matters more than coloration. Just like any wood, if the grain is not even, then it has structural flaws. The darkwood is from the older heartwood of the tree, whereas this light wood tends to be more of the sapwood. Usually black kamagong demands a premium for its cosmetic value, because to have that much heartwood indicates a very old tree, and those are now very rare due to deforestation. The darker heartwood is also a little more heavy. Unscrupulous sellers often sell kamagong that is painted, in order to demand the higher prices. They often rely on the fact that despite being a different color, the mismatched kamagong will still be structurally sound and perform, so not giving a hint as to its actual nature through usage. Anyways, in summation, the color affects aesthetics, grain affects durabililty. In this pair, you have an even grain, but poor color, so essentially the major flaw in these sticks is cosmetic only.
