AR-15

Postby whitetopcaddy on Aug 28th, 2007, 3:03 pm

I'm currently in the market for a .308 caliber AR style rifle. It seems like there are several people on the forum that either have one or have experience using one. In my research into buying one i've found numerous manufacturers of this style of rifle. My question is how do copycats compare with the Colt model, and if anybody has one how is the accuracy on the .308?

I love the AR-10s, but I just can't justify the cost.

Have you considered the FALs or the M1As?

Mr. Sawyer,

I know this thread is a bit old, but I figure I would give you what I have heard around from down here and in the training and tactical magazines and courses I've been to. I know that DPMS (panther arms) and Rock River are suppose to make pretty good guns and I believe one of them are used by colt to fabricate parts. I have a DPMS .223 which I have had for about a year and I love the thing. DPMS and Rock River both are considerably cheaper than a Colt and I believe that some of the extra price with Colt is you are just paying for a name. I know DPMS makes a AR-15 style rifle chambered in .308 and every review I have heard regarding was good. On another side I have a friend that lives and dies by H&K (I would if they were not so expensive) which is trying to get their rifle chambered in .308. With that H&K speaks for itself with quality and performance and Price. Again though I am not a big gun guy and there are some others on here that would be able to give you alot more specifics than me. If I am late on this one and you got a rifle, what did you get and how do you like it.

Respects and Regards,
Josh

Thanks for the input, I have a bolt action Remington 700 chambered in .308, but would still like to get a "Black Gun". I have also heard and read good things about Rock River Arms and DPMS. I have seen H&Ks' version and it is nice, but was not sure if they used a .308. As far as the .308, its a good caliber and I would like to keep the different kinds of rounds that I need to have to a minimum. I don't know about the prices, but I would venture to guess H&K is a tad bit pricier than some of the others. Although I like the style and the millions of options for the AR style rifles, I really would just like a dependable semi-auto rifle with a pretty good size chambering. I know SKSs' and AKs' are pretty cheap in comparison, but I haven't decided if I want to just "settle" for something cheaper, at least for now.

Sir,
If you're still shopping, I'd urge you to consider a DSA STG58, Springfield M1a, or PTR91. They are more reliable than the big bore AR's and their magazines are more reasonably priced. The Springfield offers a gas piston action that so many AR owners are upgrading to at no extra charge, DSA gives you an adjustable gas system, and the PTR dispenses with Gas operation altogether. Surplus HK G3 mags are dirt cheap, FAL mags are @ $12, and M14 mags are on par with AR10 mags. All three are great rifles.

Going back to this. I just found my next AR project:

http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm? ... ory_id=257"

Rock River Arms LAR-8 Varmint A4. AR in .308, but uses FAL magazines (cheap and I already have a lot of it). Comes in at half or 2/3s the price of other similar AR-308s. And with this one I think all I need to do is mount a PRS stock and a decent optic on it and have a pretty decent DMR. I'll probably pick up one of these late in the fall, already blew my wad on a Rock River Arms AR 10.5" pistol upper.

Speaking of ARs, I just finished up my 3rd AR. This is the AR-57. Top-loader, 50-round magazines, shoots the 5.7 x 28mm cartridge. Cost me a pretty penny but oh so fun to shoot.

Anyone considering the purchase of an AR of any caliber should read this thread. Particularly, if you are buying an AR with the idea of it being a defensive weapon or a duty weapon. Most of the companies that put out AR's are putting out crap and skimp on important things which can dramatically increase the reliability and longevity of the weapon.
